Purpose of a Safety Switch
An electrical safety switch has the sole purpose of protecting you and your family from electric shock.
Unlike a circuit breaker, which is designed to protect the electrical system itself, the safety switch is designed to instantly cut power when it registers a current leak. These are usually caused by faulty wiring, power points or appliances and can be dangerous for you and your family.
Queensland Safety Switch Requirements
Since 1992, safety switches have been a compulsory component for all new homes in Queensland. They are also required to be installed if any work is done to update a pre-existing electrical system.
Selling or Renting
Before being sold, Queensland homes require safety switches to be installed on the property’s power circuits. The same goes for rentals. Within six months of a new lease agreement being signed, landlords are required to have a safety switch installed on every power point circuit.
Testing a Safety Switch
Testing a safety switch is very simple and can help to ensure your safety. Every safety switch has a button labelled either ‘test’ or ‘T’, which allows you to test the responsiveness of the switch. This also gives you a chance to get an idea of which circuits in your home you are actually protected from.
If you’ve done a test and are unsure of whether your safety switch is working effectively, a licensed electrician will be able to help you determine the state of your safety switch and whether or not it needs replacing.
Is One Safety Switch Enough?
Not necessarily. A safety switch is only designed to protect you from the circuit it is directly connected to.
Because of this, it is recommended by the Queensland Government that you consider having a safety switch installed on every circuit in your home. This means on all light, hot water, oven, air conditioning and power point circuits.
When it comes to electricity, there is always a very real risk. Safety switches are your best defence in the event of an electrical fault and it is important that you are adequately protected.
